I was lucky enough to be on board this amazing aircraft when they did the engine start-up with Table Mountain in the background making for a great spectacle – May 2012

I’m jealous. Really like old aircraft. First plane i flew on when I was 18 months old was a DC3 Dakota beionging to British European Airways, flying from Liverpool to the Isle of Man.
I usually prefer modern and new but there was a definite charm and quality that I couldn’t help but admire about this aircraft.
Are there really two sets of props per engine or am I seeing double? Very nice photograph.
There are indeed 2 sets of counter rotating props per engine. This is to cope with the torque of the engine. If they only used three blades they would have been too long for the undercarriage.
Beatiful bird, and the view. I can imagine the sound of those rotors.
Sound was quite incredible, especially from inside the cockpit 🙂
Woooow, you have amazing photos!! This is my favorite, but the one with the snake is very impressive too (but scary!) 🙂
Thank you. It helps living in such a beautiful city and country 🙂
